Songs for the Table

For God's gratious gift of salvation in Christ we cannot help but raise our voices in prayer, adoration and thanksgiving.  Indeed the heavenly choirs of angels sing unceassingly around the throne of almighty God the hymn of Moses and victory over Pharaoh and his army at the Red Sea.  They also sing the song of the redeemed in heaven, "Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgements are true and just..." (Rev. 19:1b-2a)

As Fr. Ed suggested in his homily, it would be wonderful for us to sing each day as a family, as adopted sons and daughters of God.  This is what we do each time we attend Mass, we sing as a family, the Body of Christ.  If we sing in the physical building of the church, how much more should we sing in the domestic church, the home?

Fr. Ed proposed a hymn, Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow, to the parish.  Maybe sing it before the evening meal?  Before the family goes to bed at night?  In the morning before all go their seperate ways for the day's work?
This would be an easy way to sing praise, adoration and thanksgiving to God and a reminder from Whom all things come.
A second, though a slightly more challenging option would be to learn to chant the traditional Catholic blessing before meals.  Hopefully we all say this anyway before meals, but this is a way, in the words attributed to St. Augustine, that those who sing pray twice!  Click on the link below for a copy of the music.

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
